TEAM CHALLENGE

Home / TEAM CHALLENGE

The Team Challenge Course is a collection of structures carefully blended into the natural wooded setting of the Calvin Center. Designed to challenge groups and individuals to work together to accomplish an objective(s).

The group’s time begins with ice-breakers, here the group will begin to lose any apprehension and nervousness and break down any barriers while engaging in fun activities together. These activities encourage participants to try new things together and move outside their normal comfort zone, while setting the tone for their experience with us.

After this brief time the group will (depending on its size) either travel together to the Team Challenge Course or break into smaller groups to enable facilitators to better serve your pre-determined needs.

All activities or elements on the Team Challenge Course are only 12 feet off the ground or lower. They place participants in situations that require, at times, some physical action and agility. Our facilitators are always seeking to make every experience safe for the participants physically, mentally and emotionally. Therefore if at anytime a participant feels ‘unsafe’ they have the opportunity to “opt out, but not drop out”. At which point the facilitator would assign another (equally important) role to that person(s). However keep in mind that to grow in ourselves and as a group with need to take calculated and safe risks. Nevertheless at NO TIME will a facilitator use un-reasonable means to get a participant to complete an activity.

Our well trained staff will facilitate the group through a number of activities, including some of the following…

    • Spiders Web
    • Nitro Crossing
    • Incomplete Bridge
    • Swamp Crossing
    • Blind Maze
    • All Aboard
    • Whale Watch
    • Ski’s /Trolleys
    • T-P Shuffle
    • Tension Traverse
    • Wild Woozy
    • 10ft Wall
    • Porthole

While having fun is a big part of the Team Challenge Course, time on the course is designed to respond to what a particular group or team feels it needs. Upon receiving the pre-course information sheet our facilitators design a flexible lesson plan (that is open to various changes) that guides the group through different elements with the aim of using it as a catalyst to try, risk, experience, grow and apply to the group’s specific situation.

A critical component of the group experience is debriefing. Our facilitators are trained to foster an environment of trust, safety and support in which participants are encouraged to discuss their experience and share their observations, interactions and applications to their real world situations.

To help assure a positive experience for all group members, participants should come prepared. This includes wearing closed-toe shoes with backs (athletic shoes are recommended), pants or shorts which allow for easy stretching and movement, and a shirt that is not revealing. It is also recommended that members dress in layers, as we are outside in different types of weather and temperatures.

Team Initiatives

Team or Group Initiatives are a series of activities utilizing real or imagined ground-based activities or obstacles. Facilitated by our well trained, enthusiastic staff, participants will take part in challenging activities to encourage them to work together and find solutions. Success is achieved only when all members have contributed to an outcome. The activities include…

  • Stepping Stones
  • Minefield
  • Warp Speed
  • Nuclear Waste
  • Bucket Pass
  • And Key Punch… to name a few.

These activities foster teamwork, communication, and create community. Team or Group Initiatives may be a stand alone session or serve as a springboard for the Team Challenge course, depending upon the group’s ages, abilities and goals.

High Ropes Course

The High Ropes Course is a series of connected rope elements 30-45feet off the ground. Participants will move about the course testing their physical, mental, and emotional strength in order to complete each element. While teamwork applications can be incorporated in the group’s time on the course, the emphasis is on personal challenges and intensity of effort.. The High Ropes participants overcome fears while building personal trust and a sense of accomplishment.

Beginning with an interactive safety presentation by our well trained facilitators, the group will be introduced and trained on how to use the different equipment and move safely around the High Ropes Course. Then participants will enter the course through one of two cargo nets before taking on a series of challenges that can be chosen by the participant. Some of these elements include…

  • Burma Bridge
  • Horizontal Net
  • Leap of Faith
  • Disappearing Bridge
  • Postman’s Walk.
  • The experience culminates in a thrilling exit from the course by either the Giant Swing or Zip Line. While the entire group may not be in the air at one time, there are opportunities for members of the group to provide each other with encouragement and reassurance.

Climbing Wall

The Climbing Wall is for those who like taking on physical challenges. The wall is some forty feet tall with different climbs of varying skill levels on two different climbing faces. One side is flat all the way, while the second side offers some overhangs and inclines that climbers are required to maneuver. Once at the top participants are belayed back to the ground and may start over again. Our staff facilitator will help assure safety as well as fun.

Pamper Pole

The Pamper Pole is the newest addition to our Challenge Course. Similar to the High Ropes Course this stand alone activity pushes participants to the limit - physically and mentally. The Pamper Pole would make a great addition to both a low or high challenge program. Once atop the Pamper Pole, participants will physically leap in order to hit a ball 40 feet in the air. All this occurs while the participant is securely wearing a harness and climbing rope that is belayed from the ground. This activity helps participants investigate the topic of real and perceived risk.

Under the guidance of our well trained facilitators, participants will experience a new adventure as they grow personally in areas of trust and confidence. They will encourage one another to push themselves to new limits.
