A Place To Meet The World
Imagine a world where there would be no hunger, where everyone
had clean water, with
doctors and hospitals for all, with a safe place to sleep
for everyone. This maybe a reality for many of us but it
is also just a dream for a large portion of the worlds
population. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor as
ourselves and so it is our duty to care for those who are
weak and poor.To help us with this task it is important
to have a better understanding of life in developing countries. The
Calvin Center together with P.A.T.H. have made it one of
their goals to increase the knowledge about the Third World
among young people as well as adults. They have started
to construct five different “villages”, representative
of life in Haiti, Nicaragua, Palestine, Kenya and a “barrio”.
Guests live and work there for a while with all the limitations
so many in this world have to cope with every day. The
Global Village offers mission teams the chance to prepare
themselves for upcoming trips to foreign countries. Whether
you stay in the Village for a day, a weekend or a week,
you will come away with a changed perception of the world
around you.
Laura wakes up from the sound of rattling pots
in the kitchen. She smells the charcoal fire and an empty
feeling in her stomach wins from the desire to stay in bed
a little longer. She slides from under the mosquito net and
puts her feet on the dusty floor. The cool morning air surprises
her when she steps out of the door and she shivers. A nosey
goat sniffs out her hand looking for some feed. The fire
in the kitchen colors the walls and tin roof a soft red.
Someone is boiling water and she wonders if there is anything
to eat yet. The village bell down the road breaks the silence
and the muffled protest coming out of the house next door
indicates that her brother and his friends are not ready
to wake up yet. Laura knows it’s her turn to go to
the well to get water and she looks around for a jug….
A story from a far away land? Nah! Just an story from one
of our Global Village Guests.
